Sarpace is the second kingdom of Sogel. The kingdom is not troubled by its secondary status at all, so there is no real rivalry with Carregor. Sarpace is not as strictly feudal as Carregor, and its economy is not just agrarian. There are several duchies which specialize in mining, particularly in the hills to the east and mountains to the north.
Sarpace was originally founded in YYYY as a reaction to the growing power of Carregor. A number of nobles united behind a charismatic leader, NNN, who became the first king of Sarpace. NNN was actually not native to Sarpace, nor a noble. However, he brought a previously-unknown power to Sarpace - the magic of wildspace.
As Carregor was unlocking the secret of Cainam, the Sarpacians turned to materials and magics gained from wildspace traders. They unleashed flying ships and smokepowder, while encouraging explorers to seek additional aid. Even after the kingdoms joined to form Sogel, the spark of exploration had been lit.
Since Sarpace does not border on the ocean, the kingdom has maintained a healthy interest in wildspace exploration. Sarpacian traders, sponsored by the nobles, bring new goods back to their duchies. A healthy economy of craftsmen has developed, and races from wildspace are welcome to visit - or even settle in the kingdom. The kings of Sarpace have shrewdly encouraged the settlers to lend their expertise to the crafts, thus strengthening Sarpace into a powerful nation.
Sarpace is more diverse than any of the kingdoms except for Thydencia. Part of this is due to the efforts of the nobles to reach into Wildspace, and welcome visitors to settle or trade.
Krybor is a cold land. Krybor is primarily at elevated altitudes, so its terrain is frigid. A glacier fills the region at the highest reaches, which forms part of the border between Krybor, Cartarak, and XXX in Altema. Krybor claims the glacier as part of its territory. Slightly lower is an alpine lake, which remains partially frozen for most of the year. Though bitterly cold, the duchy has its own natural wonders. Spires of clear ice, twisted with lacy ribbons, rise to heights of 100 feet in certain areas. How they are formed is a mystery.
Since Krybor borders Mutro, there are several mining expeditions in the duchy. Unfortunately the frigid lands mean that the mining operation takes place in bitterly cold conditions. However, the inhabitants have developed quite a few recreations to deal with the harsh conditions, including skiing down the mountains surrounding Krybor.
Its ruler, Duke Zenn, is the second son of Duke DDD of Cartarak.
Pyrisus is a small duchy near the north end of the kingdom. It is a moderate duchy of hills and forests, and include a small spur of the XXX mountains.
The duchy is primarily ruled by the elves, and is home to both high elves and gray elves. A small clan of Avariel (winged elves) also dwell in the duchy. The elves are currently seeking other elven races to migrate into the duchy. Each race of elves has one voice on the High Council, which advises the duke. The elves also have contact with the Elven Imperial Navy of Wildspace, and a hidden spaceport in the hills provides a place for naval ships to dock.
There are some humans in the duchy. There is also a community of Xeph who recently emerged. The Xeph are trying to get a representative on the High Council, so far with little success.
The forests of Pyrisus are off-limits to any non-elves. The elves have constructed powerful sentries from the woodlands which help protect their lands. A few centuries ago, the elves stole some of the secrets of construct manufacture from the duchy of Rofolis. Since then, they have developed their own constructs.
There is also a small community of drow living under the hills of Pyrisus. The high elves are trying to form a homeland for all elves, and have extended a peace offering to the drow. For their part, the drow - who originally settled in Pyrisus after losing a feud with other drow - have accepted the offer, and have not taken up arms against the other elves. Some of the elves only believe it is a matter of time, though the drow have a representative on the High Council.
The drow have used the duchy as a base of operations for some night-time raids. They have plagued even Krybor, and they know hidden tunnels into many places within Sarpace. The other elven races turn a blind eye toward this activity (mostly). The drow contribute some of the stolen goods to the other elves in exchange for their support.
The combination of nocturnal raids and elven magic give the elves of Pyrisus a renowned ability for espionage. The elves are believed to excel at ferreting out information, and the king of Sarpace is quite willing to overlook an occasional error in judgement in exchange for reliable intelligence. Currently the elves are trying to discover the secrets of Uniflosta, with only minor success.
Sar'Olis is an old duchy, originally a significant small kingdom itself. It is divided by the RRR river, and lies near the center of the kingdom. It is a rival of Barlutro.
Long ago, the duke of Sar'Olis was appointed the task of patrolling the kingdom from internal threats, and given considerable liberty to enter into other duchies to deal with such threats. This role has diminshed somewhat as other duchies have opposed the Sar'Olis dukes' role. Some of the actions taken by the Sar'Olis dukes have just worsened their relations with other duchies.
Today, the Sar'Olis dukes have adopted a policy of aiding only when asked by another duchy. This has gone a long way toward smoothing relations, and currently the relations between Sar'Olis and the rest of the duhies is good. The only exceptions are Barlutro and Pyrisus.
L'Mares is a small duchy primarily composed of dromites, though there are some humans. The duchy is arid, and borders Mutro to the east. The dromites are the actual rulers of the duchy; the duke's position is rotated among the established dromite queens, all of whom share the secret of the Cainam for the duchy.
The land of L'Mares is mostly arid badlands, with scrub vegetation. Some of the humans herd cattle.
Because there are numerous diverse targets who might know the secrets of the Cainam, the dromites have become quite insulated to protect their queens. Consequently, few dromites trust humans or other races, and contact with the dromites is frequently difficult. The duchy of Uniflosta is shrouded in mystery, The identity of the duke or duchess is not known to the populace at large. Ducal edicts are few, but the ruler's will arrives via a variety of means, usually magical messengers of some type. The duke or duchess has never acted against the king or kingdom, but his/her goals and abilities are an enigma.
For the most part, the people of the duchy live without a great deal of concern about the duke. The duke's edicts are few, and generally coincide with the people's general desires anyway. Every so often, a bizarre edict is issued though, and the populace sometimes must interpret the edicts. The duke enforces the edicts strictly, even the unusual ones. Magical servants handle enforcing the edicts.
There are a number of sites in the duchy where unusual building-sized srructures can be found. One of them for instance resembles a floating torus about 300 feet in diameter, while another is a crescent-shaped arch touching the ground in only the two points. Nine have been located so far. Each of them are protected by magical servants which resemble those used by the duke, so it is assumed that the duke is responsible.
The primary town of the duchy is Huloress. Huloress is a normal walled city of about 30000 people.
Exol-Para is a duchy of two small city-states nestled in the mountains south of Krybor. There are several dormant volcanos in the duchy. Originally there was a third city-state, but it was destroyed by powerful magics during a conflict with the elves of Pyrisus. The ruins of Buna are surrounded by a permanent cloud of noxious miasma, and only a single solitary tower remains intact.
The two cities are partly dwarven construction, and there is a strong dwarven populace within the land. Both cities have partial domes constructed over them by the dwarves, and other elements of dwarven architecture are common. The cities are somewhat isolationistic, so visitors from outside the duchy are discouraged. The land is also occasionally plagued by giants.
Both humans and dwarves mine for ores in the rich mountains. Exol-Para is the source of fine marble and metals, including mithril. The marble of this land, which is veined with an unusual bluish color, is eagerly sought by many nobles for their building projects. The partial domes of the city states are made from this marble.
On the other hand, the citizens of Exol-Para are quite willing to travel to other lands. Many of the dwarves hire onto expeditions as advisors. Exol-Para has good relations with Mutro, and the dwarves of the two duchies frequently consult one another on mining operations.
This duchy is claimed by Sarpace, though it has little ability to enforce its claims. Several hundred years ago, a Sarpacian noble took a ducal Cainam crystal on an expedition through Wildspace to Alinah (Ganae's primary moon). Supposedly, the crystal ritual was completed, but the nascent duchy was overrun by Alinah's inhabitants. The survivors are somewhat unclear about the events, but the King of Sarpace believes the crystal is still active. Several expeditions have attempted to reclaim the duchy, with little success. The last expedition was about 15 years ago
